Hailing from Harlem, Kelis began her stardom as a singer-songwriter, linking up with Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, which led to a record deal with Virginia Records. She sang raw sounds of soul, hip-hop and electronic with her 1999 album “Kaleidoscope" by production duo, The Neptunes. The album included “Get Along With You” and the primary single “Caught Out There” hit Billboard's Hot 100 and Top 10 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. At this time she also featured on the legendary Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money“ which was a US Top 40 single and Top 5 on The UK Singles Chart.
She later became most notorious for her mouthwatering hit single “Milkshake” bringing all the boys to the yard. The record from her third album “Tasty” both went Gold selling 533,000 copies, earning her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. She’s also known for singles “Trick Me”, “Millionaire" featuring Andre 3000 and “Public” featuring Nas, which was a charting success internationally in the US, UK, and Australia. Her fourth studio album “Kelis Was Here” included the lead single “Bossy” featuring Too Short, which went multi platinum. Her latest studio album “Food” released in 2014 with influences of funk, gospel, and afrobeat, which was the songstress’ second highest peaking album after “Tasty.”
When she’s not making music, she’s doing culinary training with diverse foods and traveling the world. Kelis graduated from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in 2008 which led to the launch of “Bounty and Full” serving a myriad of 100% natural sauces. “Everything is better smothered, dipped and poured,” she says. Being the food aficionado that she is, Kelis has made appearances on several competitive reality tv series such as Hell’s Kitchen and Top Chef Masters. Her 2015 debut cookbook “My Life on A Plate” is filled with delicious recipes exploring tastes of cultures and her experience as a Chef, Musician, mother, and wife.
